John Isaac Newcomer, my grandfather, was Justice of the Peace from 1918 to 1920, and Mount Morris Township Clerk from 1928 to 1930.
He farmed northeast of Milledgeville, Illinois from 1937 to 1941. John apparently, from stories my dad told me, dabbled in several occupations, but which occupations was never clear to me.
John was seventeen years older than his wife, Esther Mae Burns, a nurse.
I knew my grandmother, Esther, but not my grandfather. Esther enjoyed life, and it seems that John and she had many turbulent years together, and apart.
My mother, although she was not my mother then, nor even dating my father, was bowling in December 1941 in Polo, Illinois, when the gentleman bowling in the lane next to her collapsed and died from a heart attack. That gentleman was John Newcomer.
