John BOWMAN Junor15 was born in 1745. Some have speculated that John Bowman, Jr. may be the John Bowman who married Elizabeth Eichenberg, but the birth years are 19 years apart. Maybe this John Bowman is the father of the John who married Elizabeth Eichenberg. Parents: John BOWMAN Senior and Eve .

John BOWMAN Senior1501,1509,1556 was born about 1764 in , Lancaster, PA. John Bowman, Sr. was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylavania, according to one source and in Plum Run, Conocac, Maryland, according to a second source. Both of these possibilities came from, but no further source information was provided. He died apoplexy in 1804 at the age of 40 in , Franklin, VA. He signed a will on 30 September 1804 in , Franklin, VA. John Bowman, Sr.'s will is reprinted on page 244 of the Franklin County Will Book. John Bowman and his brothers, Jacob, Benjamin and Peter, settled in Rockingham County, Virginia around 1785. John moved to Franklin County, Virginia on 6 October 1788, and bought 230 acres on Griffith Creek from Martin Ihoy for 30 pounds. In 1789 he was willed 100 acres in the same area by his friend, Jacob Cradler. Also in 1789, John bought 116 acres on Little Creek from Robert Mead. In 1792 he purchased another 30 acres from Mr. Mead. When he died his estate was valued at more than $5,000.

There is confusion about John Bowman's father. I have not linked John Bowman to any father, although I have describe the potential links in the following paragraphs. Also, I have the potential links in my database for those that wish more information on them.

The link from John Bowman (about 1764-1804), who married Elizabeth Sarah Eichenberg, to Wendel Bauman (about 1681-1735), who married Anna, has not been verified.

Below, I have describe the potential links. Also, I have the potential links in my database for you wish more information on them.

Four possibilities have been explored about who John Bowman's father is. One possibility, although the least likely, is that John Bowman descended from the Bowmans of England who came to America. I know of no evidence to link John to the English Bowmans.

A second possibility is that John Bowman descended from Wendel or John Bowman, brothers who came to America in 1707 and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I have no information on the descendents of John Bowman, brother of Wendel. It is possible that our John Bowman is a descendant of Wendel's brother John. On Wendel Bowman, there is considerable information, some of which suggests that John is a descendant, but most of it denies any link between our John and Wendel.

In 1955, Wayne St. Clair Bowman, writing on pages 229 to 231 in Charles Ikenberrry and W. Lewis Eikenberry's A History and Genealogy of Peter Eichenberg Family stated, "Wendell Bowman ... lived for a time in Germantown, now a part of Philadelphia, but later moved to Lancaster County, where he died in 1735 at the age of fifty-four, leaving eight children and many grandchildren. From this section came John and Elizabeth Eikenberry Bowman to southern Virginia in 1784." I believe the word "section" refers to the geographical area. While this may mean that there is a ancestral link, it is only a possibility.

Later in his writing, Wayne St. Clair Bowman stated, "The relationship between John Bowman, who moved to southern Virginia in 1784, and the Bowmans of the Valley is difficult to determine, although descendants of practically all the settlers claim a kinship."

Emmert Bittinger, who has done extensive research on Wendel Bowman's descendants, rejects John Bowman who married Elizabeth Eichenberg as a descendant of Wendel. Both the John who is descended from Wendel and our John who married Elizabeth Eichenberg were born in or about 1764, thus adding to the confusion, but they are not the same person in Bettinger's opinion.

One writer, though, has linked our John with Jacob "Dunker Jockel" Bowman, a descendant of Wendel Bowman, but it is not clear why James Denlinger believed the link to be verified. It may be the common birth year of 1764.

Another version of this lineage is Jacob "Dunker Jockel" Bowman's fathter, Jacob "Nimrod" Bowman." Both Jacobs had sons named "John." Maybe "Nimrod" is the Jacob who fathered our John, but there is no evidence to verify such a link.

A third possibility is that our John descended from John Bowman, Sr., who married Eve. Eve's maiden surname may have been Brenneman. John and Eve had a son named John, Jr., but he was born in 1745. This is 19 years before our John's birth. It is possible that our John is the grandson of John and Eve. I have no evidence to verify that this is so, however. After John Bowman, Sr.'s death, Eve married Christian Brower.

The fourth possiblity is that our John descended from Daniel or Jacob, brothers who arrived in Philadelphia aboard the Adventure in 1727. Even here, though, Ken Bowman told me that he could not find any Bowman/Baumann listed as arriving on the Adventure.

In 1956, Bryon W. Bowman wrote of Jacob Bowman, Sr., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, "The name of the father of Jacob, Benjamin, John and Peter Bowman, all of which settled in Rockingham County, VA, is predicated on the fact that Jacob is listed in the 1790 census of Rockingham County as Jacob, Jr. Nothing further is known about Jacob Bowman, Sr., although he is presumably a descendant, perhaps a son, of either Daniel or Jacob Bowman, both of whom arrived in Philadelphia October 2, 1727 on the ship Adventure "last from Rotterdam".

Here I see another point of confusion. If our John Bowman were the son of Jacob, Sr., and brother of Jacob, Jr., Benjamin and Peter, he would be the grandson of either Daniel or Jacob, who may have emigrated on the ship Adventurer in 1727.

According to Sarah Ann Bowman, John Bowman's father, either Daniel or Jacob, came to America on the ship Adventurer. The father landed in Philadelphia on 2 October 1727. By 1785, John was living in Rockingham County, Virginia, and by 1788 in Franklin County, Virginia. He bought a farm on Rocky branch of the Blackwater River in what is now Franklin County. This link seems the most likely, but more concrete evidence is needed to verify the link.

A web site ( lists "Immigrants into Pennsylvania, Names of foreigners who took the oath of allegiance--1727." No Baumann/Bowman is listed, but there is listed a "Jacob Powman." Powman may be a misspelling of Bowman. Another possibility is that our Bowman ancestors came on the ship but did not take an oath of allegiance.

John Jasper BOWMAN564 was born on 30 August 1874. He died in January 1965 at the age of 90. "Genealogy of a Bowman Family," by Byron Whitener Bowman, 1956:

Biography of John Jasper Bowman

John Jasper Bowman, oldest son of T. A. and Emma Bowman, was born at
Pocahontas, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, on August 30, 1874. He was
educated in the public schools of Jackson, Salem, Pacific, and Steelville,
Missouri, and graduated from the high school at Slater, Missouri, in 1891,
being the first boy to graduate from that high school. He spent four years in
William Jewell College at Liberty, Missouri, graduating with the degree of A.B.
in 1897. His college course was interrupted by one year of work to obtain
funds with which to finish his education. He taught in Will Mayfield College,
Marble Hill, Missouri, and was employed in the office of the Dunklin Democraft
at Kennett, Missouri in 1895. While in college, he was awarded gold medals in
essay and oratorical contests and represented William Jewell College twice in
the state intercollegiate contests, at Sedalia in 1894 and at Kansas City in
1896. In speaking to his father about him, Dr. J. P. Greene, president of the
college, once said: "We never had, and we never will have a better student in
college." That statement was always a source of great joy and satisfaction to
the father.

John had no easy time in college, for funds were scarce, and he spent much time
working in the newspaper offices in Liberty, being a good printer, and thus
paid most of his expenses. This work was not allowed to interfere with his
studies, however, for he always kept up with all of his classes and took part
in all the activities of college life. He took a prominent part in literary
society work and in his senior year was elected June President of the Excelsior
Society, one of the honors of college life. He was a charter member of Alpha
Omega chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

After his graduation from William Jewell College, he taught in Farmington,
Missouri, a short time and then engaged in newspaper work at Salem, Maryville,
Lathrop, Liberty, and Louisiana, Missouri, editing papers at Salem and
Louisiana. In 1901, he engaged in the banking business, going to Lake City
Arkansas where he opened the Farmers and Merchants Bank and was cashier for
more than two years. His health having become impaired by malaria, he returned
to Missouri in 1905 after having been connected for a short time temporarily
with the State National Bank of Little Rock, Arkansas, and went to Bonne Terre,
Missouri as cashier of the Bank of Bonne Terre, which had just been

In 1907, he accepted a position with the Farmers and Miners Trust Company at
Bonne Terre, one of the largest banks in the smaller towns of the state at that
time, and remained until 1913 when it liquidated its business. He then
organized the Peoples Bank of Bonne Terre and was cashier and later president.
When the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was established in 1932, he was
appointed as one of the first examiners in Missouri and served in the western
part of the state until his retirement. Later he entered business again and
was connected with the Liberty Marketing Company several years and was manager
of a wholesale brokerage house in Kanasas City, Missouri, for some time. In
1954 he was appointed City Treasurer of Liberty, Missouri, to fill a vacancy
caused by the death of the former treasurer.

He was married in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 4, 1905, to Miss Betty Hill,
daughter of George W. and Helen Turner Hill, formerly of St. Clair County,
Illinois. She was educated in the public schools of St. Louis and graduated
from Washington University in St. Louis with the degree of A.B., magna cum
laude, in 1897. She then taught language in Liberty Ladies College at Liberty,
Missouri, for six years, until her marriage. She was outstanding as a
linguist, being noted for her knowledge of German, French, Spanish, Latin, and
Greek, all of which she taught at various times. After the family moved to
Liberty, Missouri, she taught language in William Jewell College for ten years.
She died in Liberty, Missouri, on September 28, 1953, after an illness of two
and one-half years.

One daughter, Georgia Bessie, was born of this union, at Bonne Terre, Missouri,
May 20, 1914. After graduating from the public high school at Bonne Terre, she
was graduated from William Jewell College at Liberty in 1934. She attended the
School of Journalism of the University of Missouri at Columbia and received the
degree of Bachelor of Journalism there. She received the degree of Master of
Arts in speech and radio at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
She taught in the high schools of Liberty and Hannibal, Missouri, and after
graduating from Iowa State University was connected with radio station WLW at
Cincinnati. She next taught radio news broadcasting in the School of
Journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia and during World War II
took a leave of absence and was Director of Radio Broadcasting for the American
Red Cross in 17 states of the Midwestern area. She taught in the Speech
Department of Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, New York, for one year and then
returned to Liberty as Director of Forensics, debate coach, and teacher of
journalism at William Jewell College, where she now is.
